Nelson MP Nick Smith has welcomed the Nelson City Council’s decision to contract its Community Housing to the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust.
“I am a huge fan of the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust as a national leader in a new model of housing support. These additional 142 community units on top of the 44 homes already owned by the Trust helps build it into the scale organisation to better serve people in housing need across the region.
“We had an old model of houses either being privately owned or state owned. This new model of community social housing providers is part of the Government’s broader reforms to the housing sector. This new contract to manage the Council’s housing will make the Trust a major player in local provision.
“The Housing Trust is much more connected to the community than a big state agency like Housing New Zealand. They are also better at managing social housing than Council because it is their core business.
“I commend the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust on taking on this major expansion and pay tribute to their founding trustees who had the vision to establish the organisation in 2004.”
