Nelson MP Nick Smith has been assigned the National caretaker role for the Tasman portion of the West Coast Tasman electorate.
“I am looking forward to providing a National and Opposition voice for the wider Tasman area. I know the area well from my six years as MP for Tasman and the community is so connected to the Nelson electorate that many issues are common. I will be holding regular clinics in places like Motueka in my electorate caravan, attending community events and including all of Tasman in my annual newsletter.”
Dr Smith has been assigned the area from National after List MP Maureen Pugh lost her seat in Parliament in the General Election after the counting of special votes. Jo Hayes, a National List MP in Christchurch will cover the West Coast portion of the electorate.
“It is quite possible Maureen Pugh may return to Parliament during this term if any List MP retires early as she is the next candidate, but we want to provide a continuity of connection with National in the interim.
“I will be providing a regular constituency service for Tasman people. This is important as West Coast Tasman MP Damien O’Connor will have the extra demands of his new Ministerial duties.
“National outpolled Labour in the party vote in most of the booths in Tasman. My work will help in ensuring these voter’s voice is heard in Parliament, as well as building National’s support for the next election.”
