Nelson MP, Nick Smith says his thoughts are with the family and friends of prominent businessman Sir Pat Goodman.
“I knew Sir Pat both as MP for Tasman and Nelson, and as his global business empire grew he never forgot his connection with our community. His legacy is the many philanthropic projects he so generously supported particularly Garin College, Nelson’s arts and Motueka’s Recreation Centre.”
“I particularly pay tribute to the role Sir Pat played in helping establish Garin College. As Minister of Education, I could only get so much funding from the Government for the new school, and it was Sir Pat and wife Lady Hillary that filled the hole and made it happen. Hundreds of students have subsequently benefited from this new co-ed Catholic College in our region“
“Sir Pat was an exceptionally talented businessman. There are many New Zealand businesses that tried to make it in Australia, but few succeeded. The way Sir Pat grew a bakers shop in Motueka into a global enterprise is an inspiration to a new generation of entrepreneurs.”
“Our Nelson and Tasman communities have lost an amazing entrepreneur and philanthropist. We wish his family here and abroad well at this difficult time.”
